Gentle Strength for Lingering Illness

This classic formula is ideal when you’re just not quite right after an illness — especially after viral infections like glandular fever, shingles, or chickenpox. Xiao Chai Hu Tang helps the body recover when energy is low, symptoms linger, and the immune system feels depleted.

Traditionally used in Chinese medicine to harmonise and support the body’s internal defences, this formula gently clears residual pathogens, restores vitality, and boosts immune resilience. It’s also commonly used post-vaccination (especially in children) to support the body’s natural recovery and regulatory processes.

A go-to formula for:

  • Lingering fatigue or symptoms after viral illness

  • Recurrent colds or slow recovery

  • Post-vaccination support

  • Gently pushing out “half-in, half-out” pathogens

Gentle yet powerful, this is a foundational formula for supporting recovery and rebuilding resistance.

Resistance #2 Formula is indicated for the following:

This formula was first recorded in the Treatise on Cold-induced Diseases (shang han lun), by Zhang Zhong-jing (circa 150 - 219 C.E.). It was originally used in the treatment of the lesser Yang syndrome (shao yang bing zheng) in acute febrile diseases due to invasion by exogenous Cold. The Cold pathogen has transformed to Heat and is at a level that is midway between the Exterior and the Interior, manifesting with alternating chills and fever, etc.

Zhang recognised that this formula had a broad range of applications, and over the centuries Chinese physicians have found many more. The skilful combination of warming and cooling, as well as tonifying and dispersing ingredients lend this formula it's unique and wide ranging therapeutic applications. Essentially the formulas uses fall into two categories:

1) Lesser Yang syndrome of a Cold-induced disease (often seen as complication of the common cold or influenza)

2) Gallbladder Qi invasion of the Stomach

The clinical features of each are listed under Signs and Symptoms 1 & 2, respectively.
